With amazing history (there’s original convict cells under the guesthouse!) & the perfect barn reception space you can have a unique & elegant wedding at Guesthouse Mulla Villa. Located in the gorgeous Wollombi area of the Hunter the scenery on the 75-acre property is to die for! The cow shed has been recently converted into an amazing barn suited to all styles of weddings. Plus, there’s accommodation on site for your nearest & dearest; not to mention the endless ceremony options. We chatted with Jenny, the Events Manager, to find out more about this pretty Wollombi venue…..
We know Guesthouse Mulla Villa has a really interesting history. Can you tell us a bit about it.
Mulla Villa dates back to 1830, the actual homestead was built for the first magistrate of Wollombi by convicts in 1840. Underneath you can still find the original convict cells. Set on 75 acres you can take a bush walk or four-wheel drive and find our sandstone caves, offering many unique photo opportunities on site.
Which three words best describe a Mulla Villa wedding?
Unique, Elegant, Country Barn Style.
Three words isn’t enough to describe what Mulla Villa can offer! It’s such a ‘unique’ place with a lot of history and is suited to so many different wedding styles.
We’re excited about your new barn option! Can you describe the space to us? What’s the capacity & which styles/size of weddings are best suited to it?
Our barn has been converted from the old Cow Shed, Mulla Villa was a working dairy up until only 35- 40 years ago. We have kept the rustic style of the shed but tried to incorporate a few styling elements to add a degree of elegance.
It offers a relaxed atmosphere over three different levels, which can be used for a seating capacity of approximately 110, smaller weddings can utilise the lower levels for their dance floor extra or entertainment or as a casual seating or bar area. Pictures really don’t do it justice!
Tell us about your other reception options – the Settlers Kitchen & marquee.
Settlers Kitchen is perfect for your more traditional and intimate wedding reception for around 40 guests. This area dates back to 1830 and is perfect for a winter wedding with its beautiful original, sandstone fireplace. It also opens out to an adjoining deck for extra space and to take in the amazing rural views.
The Marquee option is our most flexible, as you can choose a marquee size and style to suit your requirements, being on a large property there are endless location possibilities!
Where in the Hunter Valley are you located & what’s it like around there?
We are in the beautiful Wollombi Valley, which is the Sydney end of the Hunter Valley – it’s approx. 1 hour from the Central coast and 1 ½ hours from Newcastle & Hornsby.
Wollombi is a gorgeous Historic Village, with more to do than you would think – there are five wineries and it’s the home of Dr Jurd’s Jungle Juice.
What style of food service options are available? You’ve mentioned that packages can be tailored to the couple, can you give us some examples of how they can be customised?
We can offer multiple food service options from cocktail style to a formal table service, and anything in between. All our packages can be tailored and mixed and match to suit; they are purely there as a guide.
Our highly versatile Head Chef will come up with a menu that suits any preferences or ideas, along with any cultural, religious and dietary requirements you may have.
Our Mulla Villa Package, for example, is a banquet style, with Cheese/Dip Platters to start, followed by share platters of 2 Meats, Roasted Vegetables and your choice of Salads for Mains served to the centre of each table. Have your own Wedding Cake served as Dessert. We recently tailored this to suit a Greek-Style Menu, our Bride and Groom also decided to add on a sit-down Entrée, an additional meat choice to the Mains and serve Petit Fours in addition to their wedding cake as Dessert.
Whatever you may have in mind for your Special Day I’m sure you will find it here at Mulla Villa.
What are your favourite features of the property?
I love the history and ambiance of the whole property, when you arrive at Mulla Villa it is so peaceful and relaxing. I keep using the word ‘unique’ but it truly is, there are lots of rustic venues out there but none that provide everything in one place like we do.
Because our catering is done on site you can liaise with both your events manager and Head Chef in the one place. Plus, you can get ready, have your ceremony, photos, reception & stay the night, without leaving Mulla Villa, it makes for a stress-free day.
Where on the property can couples have their ceremony? Is there a back-up plan in case of wet weather?
We have a rustic arbour adjacent to the barn, that is where we hold most of our outdoor ceremonies. Of course you can hold your ceremony on site anywhere you choose!
Our wet weather options are dependent on the number of your guests; we can hold the ceremony in the main homestead/deck, the lower level of the barn or we can set up a marquee.
Couples can also have a more traditional, church ceremony and choose from three local, historic sandstone churches.
Can couples hire out the guesthouse for the whole weekend? How many does it sleep?
Couples can most definitely hire out all the rooms and property for the whole weekend! We have four rooms in the main homestead which can sleep up to nine people, we also have a two-bedroom self-contained cottage which sleeps six. Two fold up beds ideal for children can also be added to bring the total number we can accommodate to 17.
What services do you provide for couples leading up to and on the wedding day?
From the moment of the first enquiry right up to your wedding day we are there to support the Bride and Groom with any requirements they may have. They can email, call or come into to Mulla Villa as many times as they like and we will do our best to help and accommodate varying needs in any way we can.
We are here to make everything as stress free as possible; we have booked in couples as little as five weeks prior to their wedding date to as far as 2 ½ years in advance, we understand that every couple is different.
Sometimes the couple may struggle with suppliers. We have a solid list of preferred suppliers here at Mulla Villa, from hair & makeup to fireworks, if we haven’t got what you are after you can be guaranteed we will do our best to find it!
We can also tailor packages to include pre-wedding dinners or lunches and post-wedding recovery brunches.
What are some of the best styling ideas you’ve seen? Are you seeing certain trends for 2018 and beyond?
In addition to coordinating the weddings/events here at Mulla Villa I have a passion for styling. I think rustic styling is definitely here to stay for a while, although I think this trend is steering away from the hessian/burlap theme to a more elegant touch.
Gone are the chair cover and table cloth days. The tables we have in the barn make a big impact, they were made locally from recycled wood and make the perfect base for rustic-themed styling.
My favourite styling idea for the barn has to be elaborate greenery taking up the centre of the table instead of table runners. With scattered tea lights, along with garlands of greenery draped around the beams, hanging terrariums used to hold tea lights and an abundance of festoon lighting – it looks amazing!
I am also seeing a “bit of bling” being bought in with touches of metallic/golds being incorporated into the colour schemes, I think this trend will last into 2018.
We love a weekend wedding extravaganza – what are some of the coolest weekend activities couples are planning for their guests?
I am finding the couples who come to Mulla Villa are coming to relax; they are enjoying the simple things like a glass of wine on the veranda or drinks around the pool taking in the view! They’re also arranging pre-wedding dinners in our main homestead, the Settlers Restaurant, and planning recovery brunches for the following day.
There are so many things to do in the area and at Mulla Villa. Enjoy wine tasting, four-wheel driving, bush walks and history tours. We also have a helicopter landing site and can arrange horse & cart trips; the options are really endless!
How far ahead do couples need to book to secure their date and what’s the best way to get in touch to arrange a viewing?
To secure your ideal date I would look at booking at least a year in advance, however, if you are flexible we still have a few Saturdays left in 2017. To arrange a viewing simply give us a call on (02) 4998 3338, or email our events manager.
